Bertha
"When there's enough of us that have nothing left but the will to live, a change will come. A change has to come."
Background
Bertha lived in Oklahoma with her husband where they had two daughters and one son who was stillborn. During the dust bowl period of the Great Depression, the family's farm was not producing well enough to keep them afloat. Bertha and her family migrated to California, along with thousands of others. They found jobs picking fruits for little money. Eventually, Bertha's husband decided that he would rather die in Oklahoma than continue to be treated badly in California. Bertha tried to fight him, but he left in the middle of the night with their daughters, leaving Bertha alone. Bertha has not heard from them since this incident.
By Chapter 3, Bertha has become a part of the unionization movement, fighting for worker's rights.
